A backup copies the records currently in Salesforce to another location and leaves the originals in place, so you can reload them if active data is lost or corrupted. An archive moves historical, rarely used records out of the live org into long-term storage so you can keep them for compliance and history while cutting the Salesforce storage you pay for and keeping current work faster. They complement each other: an archive is not a disaster-recovery copy, and a backup is not a retention or storage-optimization strategy.
