A sandbox is a copy of your production Salesforce org that runs in a separate, isolated environment so development, testing, and training never change live configuration or records. Four types differ in what they copy from production: Developer and Developer Pro copy configuration (metadata) only, Partial Copy adds a template-defined sample of production data, and Full copies metadata plus all data. Choose the type from the work you need to do and from whether that work actually requires production records.
