Shield Platform Encryption can protect a field with probabilistic encryption, which randomizes the ciphertext every time the same value is stored, or deterministic encryption, which always produces the same ciphertext for that value. Probabilistic encryption is the default and more secure choice because patterns are hard to detect, but it blocks filtering and exact-match searches. Deterministic encryption trades some of that randomness so you can still filter, sort, and compare encrypted data, using a case-sensitive or case-insensitive scheme on each field.
