Delegated authentication and SAML both let Salesforce trust another system to prove who a user is. They are not the same login experience: delegated authentication still requires a sign-in at each app while Salesforce asks an external web service to accept or reject the password, whereas SAML single sign-on lets an identity provider authenticate the user once so they can reach Salesforce and other apps without signing in again. Choose between them by whether users must authenticate separately at Salesforce, who should keep a Salesforce-managed password, and whether the org needs SAML assertions and just-in-time user provisioning.
