A roll-up summary is a field on a parent record that stores a count, sum, minimum, or maximum calculated from related child records. When you save a child, Salesforce recalculates that parent field and then runs the parent through the save procedure so parent-side validation and other early save-order work see the new value. If the parent changes and a grandparent also has a roll-up summary, the grandparent is updated and goes through the save procedure too.
