Person accounts store an individual as one combined account-and-contact record, so you share the person as a whole instead of sharing a contact that sits under a company. Once person accounts are enabled, Salesforce allows only two organization-wide sharing setups, and extra people-to-company links created with Contacts to Multiple Accounts are always indirect. Administrators use that model to decide whether business contacts stay locked to their parent account or can be shared on their own.
