A master-detail relationship binds a child object to a parent so the parent controls how the child is owned, shared, required on the layout, and deleted. You can stack that link into a chain: a detail object can itself be the master of another object, so those grandchildren become subdetail records of the original master. That hierarchy exists so related records can be treated as one unit, such as an account, its expense reports, and each report's line items.
