After a user logs in, Salesforce keeps an authenticated session until timeout, logout, or an admin ends it. Session security exists so an unattended or stolen session cannot be reused indefinitely: you control idle timeout, lock the session to an IP or domain, and can end all of a user's UI sessions when that user's password is reset. Each login method is labeled Standard or High Assurance, so reports, dashboards, connected apps, and many Setup operations can require a stronger session or block the user.
