Administrators extend objects by creating relationship fields that link records so users can see related data on a record. A lookup is a looser link: each object can stand on its own, the field can be optional or required, and you choose what happens if the related record is deleted. A master-detail relationship is a tight parent-child link in which the master controls sharing, permissions, and deletion of the detail, and it is the type that supports roll-up summary fields.
