The role hierarchy and the territory hierarchy are complementary trees, not two copies of the same org chart. Use roles for management, approvals, and other one-manager reporting; use territories to extend record access from sales coverage, including matrix reporting where someone can report to more than one manager. Sales Territories access to accounts, opportunities, contacts, and cases already rolls up through the role hierarchy, so copying the territory structure into the sales branch of the role hierarchy is redundant.
