Contacts to Multiple Accounts lets you relate one person to several companies without creating duplicate contact records. Each contact still has one primary account in the Account Name field, which is a direct relationship; every extra account is an indirect relationship stored as an Account Contact Relationship. Most features still use that primary account, so you need to know where indirect relationships show up, how sharing treats them, and what disabling or deleting actually removes.
