A package is a container for apps, tabs, and objects that a provider uses to install a solution into your org. The provider chooses managed or unmanaged, and that choice decides whether you can customize what was installed, how newer versions arrive, and whether the contents consume your org's app, tab, and object limits. Managed packages stay on the provider's upgrade path and do not count against those limits; unmanaged packages become editable in your org, count against the limits, and are not upgraded in place.
