Salesforce text fields store letters, numbers, and symbols, and you pick a type by how much text you need and whether it should wrap, format, or stay encrypted. A Text field is a single line of up to 255 characters; Text Area is the same length but displays on separate lines. Long and rich text areas hold far more, up to 131,072 characters, and changing away from those types can truncate or drop data.
