A formula field calculates a value from other fields so users do not have to do the math themselves. When you create the field, you first choose a return type: the kind of answer the formula is allowed to produce, such as a number, a date, text, or a true-or-false checkbox. That choice controls how Salesforce stores and displays the result, and the formula you write must actually produce that same kind of value.
