A custom object lets you track and store a kind of record that is unique to your organization. After you create the object, you add custom fields for the attributes each record should hold, such as text, dates, numbers, picklists, checkboxes, and lookups to other records. Use a separate custom object when the data is its own entity with a distinct lifecycle or relationships; add a custom field when you are capturing an attribute of an object that already exists.
