A picklist field offers a defined list of choices so users select from known options instead of typing free text. A regular picklist allows only one value at a time, while a multi-select picklist allows one or more values, shown as a semicolon-separated list. Choose single-select when one answer is enough, because multi-select fields have a lower value limit and behave differently in reports, formulas, imports, and later type changes.
