Master-detail and lookup both connect a child record to a parent, but they decide who can see and change the child in opposite ways. In master-detail, the parent owns access: the child inherits security from the master and cannot be shared on its own. In lookup, the child stands alone, and Salesforce does not inherit sharing from the parent.
