A managed package is the container for an app’s Salesforce metadata, and each package version is an immutable snapshot of that metadata at one moment. Installing a newer version into an org that already has the package is an upgrade; the org never holds two versions of the same package at once. Version numbers, patches, betas, and push upgrades decide what can change and how subscribers receive those changes.
