A package is a container that moves Salesforce apps and components into other orgs, including orgs outside your company. You choose managed or unmanaged based on whether the installing org must edit the solution and whether you need to keep licensing and upgrading it afterward. Unmanaged packages are a one-time, customizable drop; managed packages are the commercial, upgradeable path partners use on AppExchange.
