A roll-up summary field shows a calculated value on a parent record by reading its child records, such as the total of invoices listed under an account. Salesforce allows that only when the children sit on the detail side of a master-detail relationship, and the field itself is created on the master. Lookup relationships cannot carry roll-ups, and adding a roll-up locks the master-detail link so it cannot be converted back to a lookup.
