External objects represent data stored outside Salesforce, and that data often has no 18-character Salesforce record IDs, so a standard lookup cannot tie records together. External lookup and indirect lookup relate records by matching field values instead of those IDs. Use external lookup when the parent is an external object, and indirect lookup when the parent is a standard or custom Salesforce object and the child is external.
