A lookup filter is an administrator setting on a lookup, master-detail, or hierarchical relationship field that limits which related records users can choose. It exists to raise data quality and speed data entry by showing only valid related records in the lookup dialog and, when the filter is required, blocking saves that break the rule. The relationship still links two records; the filter only decides which target records are allowed.
