You can convert a relationship field from lookup to master-detail or the reverse so the same parent-child link can change how sharing, required parents, and roll-up summaries work. The two types are not just labels: they change record access, whether the parent is required on the page, and which objects fit in one report. Salesforce allows the change only when existing records and features already fit the destination type.
