Formula fields add, subtract, and convert Date, Date/Time, and Time values so Salesforce can calculate deadlines, ages, and elapsed time instead of users doing that math by hand. Date stores year, month, and day; Date/Time also stores a time (kept in GMT and shown in the viewer’s time zone); Time is a clock value with no date, used for things such as business hours. The same plus and minus operators return different units on each type, so matching types and converting correctly is the skill the exam tests.

  • You can add a number to a Date or Date/Time to get a future value, or subtract two values of the same type to get elapsed time. Date minus Date returns whole days as a Number; Date/Time minus Date/Time returns a decimal number of days (5.52 is five days, 12 hours, and 28 minutes); Time minus Time returns milliseconds.

  • If a formula references a Date/Time field but returns a Date, Salesforce drops the time without converting to the user’s time zone, which can produce the wrong calendar day. Convert with DATEVALUE() first.
