When you import records that belong to something else, Salesforce has to find that parent and fill a lookup or master-detail field, the field that points one record at another. You identify the parent with its Salesforce ID, or with an external ID, a custom field that stores a unique identifier from another system. Both the Data Import Wizard and Data Loader can match those parent relationships so related rows attach to the right parent.
