A security token is a case-sensitive alphanumeric key that lets a user log in to Salesforce through the API or a desktop client when their IP address is not on the company's trusted list. Salesforce never shows the current token in settings or on the profile; the only way to obtain one is to reset it and read the new value from email. Treat it as the API counterpart to a UI identity challenge: required from untrusted networks, unused when a profile already blocks those networks, and replaced by an authenticator code if Multi-Factor Authentication for API Logins is assigned.
