A compact layout is the short, ordered list of fields Salesforce uses to identify a record at a glance, especially in the highlights header at the top of the record. Every object already has a read-only system default, so you do not have to create a compact layout, but a custom one lets you choose and order those header fields. Compact layouts are set per object and, when record types exist, can be overridden per record type; they are not assigned to profiles or users.
