Initial submission actions are the automations that run the moment a user first submits a Salesforce record for approval. They exist to freeze the record in a pending state before anyone reviews it, so the request cannot be rewritten while it waits. Salesforce locks the record at this point by default; you can add extra actions such as field updates, email alerts, tasks, outbound messages, or a flow.
