Ordinary conversion rates in Salesforce are a single number per currency: change the rate and amounts update everywhere, and the old rate is not kept. Advanced Currency Management stores dated exchange rates instead, so opportunity amounts convert using the rate that applied on the close date rather than whatever rate is current today. You enable it from Manage Currencies after multiple currencies are already on; your existing rates become the first dated set and stay in effect until you add another start date.

Core information

Multiple currencies start with a corporate currency (the headquarters currency) and active currencies whose rates are stored relative to that corporate currency. Only active currencies can be entered in amount fields, and each user also has a personal currency used as the default on quotas, opportunities, quotes, and reports.

More details and nuances

Currency roll-up summaries are allowed only between two Advanced Currency Management objects, such as opportunity line items rolling up to the opportunity. After it is on you cannot create a currency roll-up from opportunity to account, you cannot filter on the opportunity currency field from the account, and existing currency roll-ups from opportunities onto objects that do not support dated rates stop calculating. Delete currency roll-ups that use opportunities with accounts or opportunities with custom objects.
