Matching criteria are the per-field settings a matching rule uses to decide whether a value on a new or edited record is close enough to the same field on an existing record to count as a match. Each criterion names a field, chooses a matching method (exact or a field-specific fuzzy method), and can say whether two blanks should count as the same. Those settings drive a two-step process: a fast match-key check that drops obvious non-duplicates, then a scored comparison against a threshold.
