Salesforce stores business data in objects, the platform's name for database tables, and already ships with standard objects for everyday records such as accounts, contacts, leads, and opportunities. When those built-in objects cannot hold information that is unique to your company or industry, you create a custom object to store it. The distinction is origin: standard objects come with Salesforce; custom objects are the ones you add, and you can attach custom fields to either kind.
