Standard fields ship with Salesforce objects, but you can still tailor how they look and behave so people enter data using the labels and values the business already uses. Typical changes include renaming the label, editing picklist values, adding help text, setting field-level security and validation rules, tracking history, applying lookup filters, and adjusting some auto-number formats. You cannot delete a standard field or make it longer; take it off page layouts or add a custom field when the built-in one is too short.
