Chatter groups are shared spaces where a team posts, comments, and shares files around a project or topic. Access type, public, private, or unlisted, controls who can find the group and who can see its feed; a group can also be archived or set to broadcast-only so only owners and managers post. People outside your company's email domains (Chatter customers) can be invited only into private or unlisted groups that allow customers, and they see those groups and their members, not Salesforce records.
