Activation is how an administrator publishes a custom Lightning page so users see it instead of a standard page. From Lightning App Builder you can make a record or Home page the default for the whole org, the default for selected Lightning apps, or a page assigned to particular apps, record types, and profiles so people get a page that matches the context they are working in. App pages use a related publish step that adds the page to Lightning apps, sets the tab users see, and places it in mobile navigation.

Core information

A custom Lightning page does not reach users until you activate it in Lightning App Builder. If the page is already ready, click Activation; if it still needs work, Save your edits and then Activate. Creating and saving Lightning pages requires the Customize Application permission.

More details and nuances

If you activate a page and later edit it, you do not have to activate it again; clicking Save pushes the changes to your users. To stop a page being an app or org default, or to stop assigning it to a form factor, redo Activation and select the option to remove it. You can add another form factor later if the page template supports it; if a device is missing from the list when you assign a page as the org default, the template does not support that device.
