When a sales rep converts a qualified lead, Salesforce creates account, contact, and opportunity records and copies standard lead fields into matching standard fields on those records. Extra information stored in custom lead fields does not copy unless an administrator maps each custom lead field to a custom field on the account, contact, or opportunity. That mapping is how the extra context, and any later automation that depends on it, survives conversion.
