Merging collapses duplicate account, contact, or lead records into one surviving principal so the team works from a single customer history. Duplicate and matching rules find those copies and can warn or block a new one during create or edit; merge is the cleanup step after duplicates already exist. Salesforce keeps most related work on the survivor and, for accounts and leads, sends the extra records to the Recycle Bin.
