Tasks and events do not attach to a custom object unless an administrator turns on Allow Activities. That setting lets users associate tasks and scheduled calendar events with the object's records so work can be tracked on the same records they already use. When you enable it, whether while creating the object or later, determines whether Salesforce places the activity related lists on the default page layout for you.
