A report type is the template that decides which records and fields a report can use, based on a primary object and its related objects. Salesforce ships standard report types that already cover most Salesforce data, so you usually start from one of those instead of building a report from scratch. Administrators create custom report types when users need custom objects or a custom mix of standard objects and related fields that a standard type does not provide.
