A dashboard widget is a visual block that takes data from one source report and displays it as a chart, table, metric, or supporting element such as text or an image. Widget types exist so you can match the picture to the question: compare groups, show change over time, track a goal, or add context a chart cannot. Lightning Experience and Salesforce Classic share the core types (charts, gauges, metrics, tables) but differ on custom components and on a few Lightning-only widgets.
