The role hierarchy is a vertical record-access ladder: users in higher roles automatically get access to records owned by, or already shared with, people below them. It exists so managers can see their team's data without a sharing rule for every manager-report pair. Each role is a level of data access a group of users needs, not a job title, so the tree does not have to match your company org chart.
